For the overall health of the coat you need to start with a very healthy diet we recommend Royal Canin (dry) and Avoderm (wet and dry) which is rich in vitamins, minerals, and oils.
We also feed raw chicken and beef. If you do not start with a good diet, no matter what conditioners, or shampoos you obtain, you will not get the healthy coat that the judges and
yourselves are looking for. A good balanced diet will also protect your cat from becoming obese which then leads to other health problems.
Flea problems to use Advantage or Frontline. For infested carpeting use an environmentally friendly citrus based products, many of which can be used in steam cleaners to fully get
all carpet areas. If you are going to become breeders it would probably be best to obtain hard wood flooring. Its easier to clean up spills, accidents and parasites can not live or breed
in the wood.
The British Shorthair, Scottish Fold, and Selkirk Rex cat coats are very similar since the three breeds are crossed. The coats are double thickness and to properly get them ready for
a show you need to be able to get the soap and water down to the skin level.
We start by filling up the tub or sink with warm water and a catalyst so the water penetrates the fur....we use Woolite 1/2 cup to start out , and throughly get the fur wet. If the coat is very
oily we then use Dawn dish washing soap( you see this also being used on wildlife when there is an oil spill in the oceans ) ...use very little it can dry out the skin. We then use
products from Chris Christensen grooming products.
Scottish Folds: Clean Start....strips and removes dirt, grease, bacteria, and soap residue from the coat. Rinse throughly
Color with White Black on Black, Color use which color you have.....brightens and brings out the highlights in the coat. Rinse throughly
White....White on White....removes any yellowing or discoloration in the white fur. Rinse throughly
After Bath....conditioner rub generously into the coat leaving it on for 5 to 10 minutes. Rinse throughly.
After you think you have gotten all the soap out rinse some more. Dirt clings to soap!!!! Towel dry off then use a blow dryer on low cool setting, brush backwards. Brushing backwards
stimulates the hair growth and you get out more of the dead hair. Some powders with cornmeal can assist in the drying process. After drying fully, apply flea products if needed.
British Shorthairs: Hair Mane and Tail shampoo. You can find this at a feed supply or equestrian store. The coat should be dense, thick, and plush. You should be able to put a hand
print into the fur and it should stay. When you pet the cat there should be very little shedding if none at all.
Mega-Tek from EQyss helps rebuild and makes the hair thicker, fuller, and heals hot spots that may occur. Conditioner that needs to be left in for 5-10 minutes.
Rinse throughly
Towel Dry your BS It is not recommended that you blow dry the British Shorthair because their coat should feel crisp and sharp, a hairdryer will leave the coat soft and could make it
to fuzzy appearing. Brush backwards just like the fold. After brushing run your hand backwards through the fur if only one or two hairs falls out your coat is in excellent condition. If a lot
of hair comes out keep brushing to get rid of the dead hair. Apply flea products if necessary
Selkirk Rex: Start with the same products from Chris Christensen just like the Scottish Folds. (Clean Start and Black on Black)
This is the tricky part finding a shampoo and conditioner that will make the curl curlier. There are many products on the market but you just have to find the best one for
your particular cats coat.
Towel dry off then let air dry the water helps produce more tightness to the curl, take the hair knots out with a pick comb. Comb only the areas that have knots. Apply flea products if
necessary.
Show Time: Before each ring we use Ice on Ice with a very soft brush on their coats. It gives the coat a splash of shine. It is a product that you do not have to worry about getting too
much buildup. Clip and remove any long hairs around the eyes of all breeds. The eyes should be round and if there is excess hair it could take away points. Use a rounded tipped ear
and nose scissors with a curved blade. Extra ear tuffs on the Scottish Folds should be removed either by pulling out the hair or cutting it back, this gives the ears a more tightness
appearance to the cap. British Shorthair and Selkirk Rex should have rounded tipped ears trim if necessary. Don't forget to clip those nails before you get to the ring. Check the eyes
for any discharge, check the ears for dirt/wax clean if necessary, check the nose for any dirt, and remove. At a show it is like a beauty contest and if you have two equally beautiful cats
up against one another, the one that is groomed better will usually be the winner.
